Aloe vera cuttings sell for about $1.00 online (check eBay and even Amazon for a ton of listings). Rather than using that cutting to root your plants, put the cutting into a container of regular organic potting soil (you don’t need to use any special soil- they do fine in a typical potting mix). Place the plant in a warm window with 7 to 9 hours of daylight a day (indirect daylight is fine). Cover the cutting with about a half inch of soil, leaving a few open spots for sunlight to hit the cutting. Water the cutting well and then, wait. DO NOT water the plant again. Allow it to dry out completely. The cutting should begin to grow it’s own small aloe vera shoots within 14 to 30 days. Once the shoots have broken the surface you can water the plant again (not drenching the soil, just moistening it). Between waterings let the soil dry out completely. Keep your aloe vera from being hit with direct sunlight for more than 6 hours a day- as this can cause the plant to wilt (this is ESPECIALLY important during Alaska's summers- make sure they can get a break from the 24 hour sunlight- they need to rest). They do fine in moderate climates, and I’ve found they do best in temperatures between 70 and 80- but can function and grow in temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Yes, they can grow in a grow tent and they do especially well if they are hidden from direct light by being kept in the shady area beneath a bushy plant.
To harvest your aloe vera cut a single stem. Slice the stem vertically down the middle. Use a spoon to scrape out the clear gel-like liquid from the center of the stem, into a bowl. You can dip your cannabis cutting directly into the gel-liquid, then plant it in soil, to help it root. You can also mix the gel-liquid into water to create teas. This tea not only helps cannabis grow stronger and healthier- but the tea can benefit ALL plants (in your garden and houseplants). It can also help root willow tree cuttings (here in Alaska) and other houseplant cuttings. Of course, as most of us also know, it’s also great for skin ailments and is safe to use externally on humans, children, and all household pets (including birds, reptiles, and mammals).
